These are some videos taken in Mbengwi 3 years after Lee and I left.

Sarah Palin

"My concern has been the atrocities there in Darfur and the relevance to me with that issue as we spoke about Africa and some of the countries there that were kind of the people succumbing to the dictators and the corruption of some collapsed governments on the continent, the relevance was Alaska’s investment in Darfur with some of our permanent fund dollars."

Anniversary trip

Lee and I just got back from our annual anniversary trip (Nov. 15th) to NYC. We went to see Damnation of Faust at the Met (which was one of the most unusual productions I've ever seen) and a broadway play (the Seagull). It was very enjoyable, although the weather was weird (so warm) and it was strange walking past all the skyscrapers of now bankrupt banks.

A message from the president on conservation

"I'm asking you for your good and for your nation's security to take no unnecessary trips, to use carpools or public transportation whenever you can, to park your car one extra day per week, to obey the speed limit, and to set your thermostats to save fuel. "

Is this president Bush speaking?

Whoops! Unfortunately, it's president Carter (1979).

Metta retreat at IMS

Another two day retreat at IMS. One year after the previous retreat. This time the retreat was a metta retreat. It was much more difficult intellectually because you have to keep bringing up the same thoughts instead of just letting go of thoughts. It seemed to start out better than the last year, but eventually it got to be emotionally exhausting. I do feel this retreat had more of a lingering effect. I.e., I think the metta practice will be more likely to carry into my daily life.

Mindfulness diet

I started a diet three days ago. So far so good. I think I’m in the mood, but we’ll see. No use reporting a diet earlier than that since you never know if it’s going to work. The general idea of the diet is to be mindful about what I'm eating. The aspects of the diet are

  • Never eat anything unless you’re giving 100% of your attention to the act of eating. Eating at a table with others is allowable but no casually stuffing food in you mouth while your doing something else.
  • Think ahead. Think about what your going to eat for a little bit in advance. Don’t be impulsive. Anticipate situations which could occur that could throw you off your diet.
  • Eliminate worthless carbs. In general, try to reduce carbs.
  • No alcohol.
  • Exercise (running and weight training). This is the easy part.

My goal comes in stages (I don’t want to look to far ahead).
  1. Feel comfortable in the clothes I’m wearing now.
  2. Lose 2 inches off my waste.
  3. Lose 6 inches off my waste.
  4. Stabilize at new weight.
